Baby Hummingbirds!

Yesterday Courtney and I were walking and we saw a most amazing thing.  Sitting on a tiny cactus nest was a tiny hummingbird.  As the hummingbird flew away I looked inside the tiny nest wondering if I could see any tiny eggs.  What I saw were three tiny hummingbirds sitting in the nest.  I took a picture,  (attached) of the babies…they are probably hard to see though!  The day before I took this picture I was given a card from one of my students with a gold hummingbird seal.  The note said “Legends say that hummingbirds float free of time carrying our hopes for love, joy and celebration.  The hummingbirds’s delicate grace reminds us that life is rich, beauty is everywhere, every personal connection has meaning and that laughter is life’s sweetest creation.”

Dating back to the Mayans the hummingbird has been known to have various symbolic meanings.  The symbolic meanings are vast ranging from the spreader of life on earth; peaceful, protectors of freedom, happiness, spiritual guidance, healing, joy, to love and beauty just to name a few.

Hummingbirds have a deep spiritual meaning.  They represent joy and the ability to suspend oneself, in the midst of chaos to find the sweetness of life.

Have you ever observed a hummingbird sitting entirely motionless whether in a tree or a cactus?  They can sit entirely motionless for several minutes, scanning the area and taking it all in.  One might say he is mindfully aware of his surroundings and is fully present.

Today let’s use our little hummingbird friend to teach us some important lessons of life.  Let’s be mindful of our surroundings and live today being fully present.  Enjoy the sweetness of life!

  1. Tammy, this blog entry is a treasure to me. I have in my draft folder a story about a baby hummingbird in our backyard the first year we moved to the desert. Your references to legends and Mayan symbolism blow me away and re-enforce the deep meaning our own backyard experience provided for us. I need to dust off my draft and bring it forward for sharing. I have been nudged. Thank you.

  2. Thanks Diana! I can’t wait to hear your piece! See you in class!
