Yesterday I sent out my online newsletter. Generally I feature one of my women writers, but since this is my birthday month I decided to write my own brief story about a defining moment, since that is what we talked about last Friday. The amazing thing was the response I have received from all of my students and friends, it was touching all of the love and the support I received via email. The article I wrote was one of my defining moment when I turned 29 and found out that I had cancer. I guess the general consensus that I heard from my students and friends was one of shock, like wow, why have you never mentioned that before. I guess the only answer that I can share is that I have never really wanted to share that part of my life because the classes that I teach are not about me, but about my students. I do have to admit that writing about that episode of my life was difficult. I don’t like to remember back to that time of feeling so scared. I can say that I have come through to the other side and this month marks my 15 year anniversary of being cancer free. So why do I have a never ending smile on my face and why do I love so fiercely…why? Because I looked death in the eye and I did not blink!
