Smile!!

AWWWW, don’t you just love this picture?  When I first saw this picture it made me smile.  It reminded me how important smiling is!  Lucky for me I enjoy smiling and laughing.  I love in my yoga class when they say….”blah, blah, blah…with your happy smiling face…”

A smile is something you can’t give away; it always comes back to you.  ~Author Unknown

A smile costs nothing but gives much.  It enriches those who receive without making poorer those who give.  It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.  None is so rich or mighty that he cannot get along without it and none is so poor that he cannot be made rich by it.  Yet a smile cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away.  Some people are too tired to give you a smile.  Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.  ~Author Unknown

It takes a lot of work from the face to let out a smile, but just think what good smiling can bring to the most important muscle of the body… the heart.  ~Author Unknown

Courtney in training…

Melitas...here is a good one!Courtney listens to every word Melitas tells her!

The other day Courtney and I were over helping Melitas with her newsletter when she yelled…”stop the presses!  It’s happy hour!”  While the Warden was out Melitas announced that she was going to go out in the backyard to pick some limes.  I followed her out because I had a feeling that in the “rule book” there must be something about no picking the limes in the back yard.  I tried to convince Melitas that I would pick some nice ones, but no….she insists on doing things herself!

So I stepped outside with her and the next thing I know Courtney, the wonder-wiener went under the tree and brought a lime right over to Melitas.  She even very gingerly put it in her mouth and then put it down and rolled it right over to her.
Once inside the house Melitas set up her glasses and I am proud to say that Courtney was a great student.  She watched every step of how to make the perfect drink…tequila on the rocks.
Melitas has two big fans, Courtney and me!

Courtney says..."melitas, is that one lime or two?"

Who says you can’t teach an old dog new tricks?

Those of you who know Melitas love her.  Next month marks my 2 year anniversary of meeting this amazing woman.  Last spring I learned that she was in charge of her desert golf leagues newsletters and each month she would take her little self down to Staples (her favorite store) and have them print over 200 newsletters (probably closer to 300, but I am too tired to call her to get the correct number, but I am sure she will let me know the exact number).  Then when they copied all the newsletters, she would go home and put them into the envelopes, put on the address labels, then the stamps and then seal each envelope!  When I learned of this ordeal I said “Stop the Presses!  Melitas, why don’t you start doing your newsletters online like I do?”

Well, at the age of 93 Melitas just sent off her first Constant Contact newsletter!  No more licking all those envelopes (well, actually she didn’t lick them, she had the envelopes where you pull the plastic off the back).  So at the young age of 93 Melitas is still working behind the scenes on the golf newsletter, blogging on Mondays on the Memoir Coach and still driving to see her friends at Staples!

My Tribe Celebrating our 1 Year Anniversary!

Melanie, Wendy, Annie and Pia

Last August while I was on a bike ride I was listening to Don Miguel Ruiz speaking about the 4 Agreements.  It was during this bike ride that I began thinking about putting together a small group of friends that would be my “tribe”.  The four women pictured to the right are the women who immediately came into my consciousness.  Some of these 4 women did not know each other, but they all knew me because they had taken my workshops.  I approached each one with my intention and they all said yes!  A year ago we had our first tribe meeting and this past Monday we just celebrated our one year anniversary.  I was struck by the fact that when I thought of my “tribe”, I thought it was a good idea, not really understanding the true meaning of what a GREAT idea it would be!

I am a strong believer in building your tribe.  I am forever grateful to my tribe and the love and support we all have for each other.
Have you thought about building your tribe?  I think forming my tribe has got to be one of the best decisions that I have ever made…I love these women!!

Where is the love?

Last week one of my best friends, Melanie asked if I would like to go and volunteer at the Palm Springs Animal Shelter and without giving it a second thought I said, “sure!”.

We decided to go after our morning yoga class on Saturday.  What an amazing place to go.  The big dogs are all in their cages, usually two friends per cage.  We were able to give each of them a “treat” and then we checked out the cat house.   These cats have quite a nice pad, but they want a forever home…look at this sweet one giving me a kiss!

I have to tell you that I have always avoided shelters because it breaks my heart to know that so many dogs are needing a home.  But what I can tell you is that giving these animals love was so rewarding.  It is a good lesson for me to remember that even if I feel that something might make me sad, I should examine if the good outweighs the bad.  Sure, some of these pets broke my heart, but we were able to give them some attention and love.  We are looking forward to giving of our time and love to the Palm Springs Humane Society.

Let me encourage you to think about what you can volunteer and do to give to others!
